Commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

Special Screening of In the Time of the Butterflies

Last night, the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in India, led by H.E. Francisco Comprés H., had the honour of commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women with a special screening of In the Time of the Butterflies.

The film portrays the courage and sacrifice of the Mirabal Sisters — Patria, Minerva, and María Teresa — eternal symbols of dignity, resistance, and the defence of women’s rights in the Dominican Republic and around the world.

In his welcome remarks, Ambassador Comprés recalled that, thanks to the heroic example of “Las Mariposas,” the United Nations declared November 25 as a global day to reaffirm the international community’s commitment to the fight against gender-based violence. Their legacy continues to remind us that the pursuit of freedom, equality, and justice must never cease.

The Ambassador also extended his deepest appreciation to María Gil, Director of the Instituto Cervantes, and to Isabel Pérez Gálvez, Cultural Manager, together with the entire team, for their invaluable support and for opening the doors of this prestigious institution to honour the memory of these extraordinary women.

May the legacy of the Mirabal Sisters continue to guide us toward a world that is safer, fairer, and more dignified for all.
